Life St James Hospital has 28 beds and 4 theatres and caters mainly for day patients and, where necessary, patients are accommodated overnight.
The excellent quality of services offered by the hospital complements those provided by its sister hospitals in the city - Life St Dominic`s Hospital and Life East London Private Hospital.

- The Life Eye Hospital East London is a joint venture between Life Healthcare and four specialist ophthalmologists – Drs Janet Edeling, Niel Holmberg, Bernard de Boer and Kelvin Rivett. This specialist unit offers world class ophthalmic care.

Patient and visitor information
At Life St James Hospital, we take pride in providing you with information and pre-operative counselling, so that your recuperation with us is pleasant and hassle-free.

Accommodation
Accommodation available at our hospital is either in general or semi-private rooms.
Admission
The following items are required for admission:
- Current medical aid membership card
- Identity document
- Pre-authorisation number, if applicable
- X-rays, if applicable
- Medication, if in use
- Personal clothing and toiletries
A parent or legal guardian must accompany all patients under 18 years.
Patients not booked into a suite are welcome to bring their own television sets
Mothers or fathers whose children are admitted as patients are welcome to stay at their bedside at all times.
Discharge
- Private patients have to settle their accounts in full (i.e. the balance of the account if the final account exceeds the deposit) on discharge.
- Day patients undergoing surgery under anaesthetic should arrange for transport from hospital - it is illegal to drive for 24 hours following anaesthetic.
Pre-Admission centre
We understand how stressful it is to be booked into hospital for surgery, particularly when you have never been a patient in a hospital before. This is why we have two pre-admission centres to assist you with your admission. The centres streamline the admission process and assist to allay the fears of patients by providing information on the surgery to be performed. Pre-authorisation is also obtained from the medical aids.

Tariffs
St James Hospital charges medical aid / medical scheme rates. Private patients will be required to pay a deposit on admission, and to settle the balance of their accounts on discharge. Patients who are members of certain medical aids may also have to make a co-payment on admission. For more details regarding tariffs and payment, please contact the hospital`s accounts department.
Visiting hours
We welcome all of our patients’ visitors, as we know what a difference the support of close family and friends can make. In light of this, we also have to be aware of the rest that all of our patients require and we have thus provided for visitors to visit our hospitals only at certain designated times and these are:
- Any time during the day until 17h00, 19h00 to 20h00 during the evening.
- Maximum of two visitors per bed at a time.
